How to create a jukebox using the slide player

WildPresenter can export your project with a player that displays your slides in thumbnail and caption form so viewers can view and navigate your output via a series of slide thumbnails and captions. You can then use this slide player output as a jukebox in which viewers can select and view numerous media files. Using this method you can create a jukebox with dozens of files in a manner of minutes.

This tutorial applies to WildPresenter Pro 2+.

Getting Started
Begin by opening WildPresenter and naming your project.
Now you should set your project dimensions (you can always change these later). The dimensions should be no less than the dimensions of the largest file you wish to display in your jukebox.

You can set the project dimensions in the Output tab of the Project Settings window.

Setting the background: If all your media files are the same size, you can set your project dimensions to match that size and there will be no space around the files. However, if your files are not all the same size, some will have spaces around them. So you will want to set a background color – or you can set the background to be transparent.

To set a background color, click on the “Slide Master” to select it and then open the Slide Settings window. Here you can set the master slide background color, or set it to be transparent. Since you are applying this to the master slide, the same background will be used for every slide in your project automatically. For this project we’ll use a transparent background.

Importing your audio/image files
You can now add an image, a video or an audio file to the first slide by selecting the Video/Audio/Image Importer button.
Browse to your media file and select a preset (or set your settings manually).

You can adjust the media dimensions and framerate in the Vid/Aud tab. If you want to add player options select the Player tab. (NOTE: If you wish to add a player to your files it is recommended that you use the “Load External File” play mode so the play controls do not interfere with the functioning of the jukebox.)

Once you have your media file prepared you can encode using the Encode & Insert button.

To add another media file to the project add a slide by selecting Slides>Insert Slide After

Repeat this process for as many media files as you wish.

Once you have inserted your media files you should rename each slide. The jukebox’s menu will contain the slide names as captions, so renaming slides creates easier navigation for the user.

To rename a slide right click on the slide navigation menu and select Rename Slide.
Once you have inserted all the media files into the project you can create a jukebox.

Selecting slide player options
When you are ready to export your project open the Project Settings window and select the Slide Player tab.
To export a slide player, check the Export Slide Player box. The Output field will display where your Slide Player will be exported. If you want to save the slide player in a different location click the Browse button.

OPTIONAL: Dimensions - you may change the dimensions at which your project will be displayed here by entering the values you want. (This affects the way the actual project is displayed - not the slide player itself, which scales automatically based on the project dimensions and the type of player used.)  If you want to change the values but maintain the same ratio of width to height, you can select the "Constrain Proportions" option. Since we do not wish to scale our media files, we will not change the dimensions.

The navigation player is a separate output from your regular project output. A number of different files that are exported by WildPresenter are required when you wish to use the slide navigation player.

OPTIONAL: In the Logo field you can enter the name of or browse to a Flash SWF file that you wish to add to the slide player output. You can load any Flash SWF and it will play at the original size (it does not scale).

You can choose to display slide captions or both. For this tutorial we are just using the slide names as out menu navigation. In addition to the caption names you can have thumbnail images, however we will not use thumbnails for this jukebox. If you do wish to use the thumbnails you can adjust the dimensions and image quality using the settings that are available. (The thumbnail images will appear just as they do in the slide navigation window in WildPresenter.) You can also adjust the size of the text used in the captions by clicking on the “Format Text” button.

In the Navigation section uncheck the Thumbnails box.
In the Skin section you can choose from a variety of skins provided with WildPresenter.
When you are ready to export your project simply select File>Export File and the slide navigation player and all the files required for that player will be exported along with all other files selected for export.
Once you have exported your file you can retrieve the slide player jukebox in the location that you earlier chose to save it.

Files required for playback:
  1. The Slide player output SWF that you specified in the slide player window. WildPresenter defaults to calling this file "your-output-swf-name_nav.swf". This file is located in your WildPresenter Project folder.
  1. The "slideNav.xml" file. This file is located in your WildPresenter Project folder. This xml file contains code that is used to construct your slide navigation player.
  1. The "Thumbs" folder located in your WildPresenter Project folder. This folder contains all the slide thumbnails used in the slide navigation player. (You only need this if you choose to export thumbnails.)
  1. A logo SWF if you choose to use one (this is not required).
  1. And all the files required to play the output normally including:
    1. the project output SWF
    2. the Load_External_Files folder if your project uses any files set to the Load External File play mode
    3. a player SWF if one has been selected
    4. and any other files you may have exported using the Project Settings window such as HTML files, etc.

Note: If you choose to add a slide player to your project, projector files that are exported at the same time will have the slide player included.
